“Why do I always have to get an admin password to load anything?!?”

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive from users. They try to install a new program, update software or any number of seemingly innocent tasks; only they run into the roadblock that is the “please enter an administrator password” pop up. They then must contact IT support to complete the process. This can be an understandably frustrating interruption in their day, and they often don’t understand why it’s necessary. I always try to explain things as best I can; but when I begin to answer them, I often get cut off with some variation of the following:

“I get it, THE COMPANY doesn’t trust me not to load games on this thing..”

I explain, in the grand scheme of things, games are the least of your IT department’s concerns. While it is true, personal apps and games take up valuable space on your PC and can affect performance. The reason goes much deeper than that, honestly. Being able to log in on your PC as an administrator is usually reserved for IT staff because it helps the entire network stay secure. If you had the ability add programs to your PC without entering administrator credentials and your account was compromised, then not only would your machine be at risk; but all the other machines on the network would be as well.

Malware, spyware, ransomware and any number of rogue applications can use your credentials to spread from your laptop to the other computers in your office, to the computers on your network in other locations and to the servers you all connect to. That’s why administrators don’t even log in as administrators on their own PC’s. Admin accounts that are separate from user accounts help ensure that everything is secure and running smoothly.

So, rest assured: It’s not that we don’t trust you, it’s that we want to keep your PC and the entire network safe so that project gets done and you can get home to play games!
